The hierarchical model is able to represent a compound cellular system with several kinds of overlapping cells set at different levels, e.g. picocells, microcells, macrocells and satellitar cells. The system is managed so that a call, which is discarded from a cell at a certain level, can overflow to the overlaying cells, going up through the hierarchy. A multidimensional birth-death model is developed to analyze the system and find the expressions of some performance indices, which are discussed for a sample system having three cell levels and only one cell per level}, NOTE = {ISBN 0-7803-3659-3} }
